Galle Literary Festival 2018
Teacher Training

Each year, the Serendipity Trust is invited to coordinate training and development programs for teachers as part of the Galle Literary Festival's Outreach Program.
In 2018, workshops were developed for over 100 student teachers from the Amarasooriya Teacher Training College in Unawatuna following consultation with the Director of English, Southern Province and at the N.I.E.
We all learn languages through listening and speaking skills and therefore students in schools need to hear English spoken, in conversation, as part of their everyday lesson. Planning this programme of work is important and inclusion of at least 8 minutes a day, speaking activities, which provide for development of these skills, vital to promote the understanding and use of English as a communication tool.
The workshop introduces and practises numerous short activities which can be taken directly into the classroom, across age ranges, to stimulate conversation and broaden vocabulary as well as building confidence, through song, drama and story.
The aim of the workshops was to encourage teachers to apply these activities in their practice and for students to benefit from them. The very positive evaluations indicates that much of the Training Programme will be tried and tested to improve students spoken English.
